Bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) for women: an honest guide

“Bioidentical” gets used loosely in marketing. Here's a straight explanation of what BHRT actually is, who it helps, and how it should be prescribed and monitored.

“Bioidentical” is one of the most marketed — and most misunderstood — words in women's health. Some clinics use it to imply a natural, risk-free miracle; that's not accurate. But bioidentical hormone therapy (BHRT) is a real, useful, evidence-based option when it's prescribed properly. Here's a straight explanation so you can make an informed decision.

What “bioidentical” actually means

Bioidentical hormones are hormones that are structurally identical to the ones your body makes — for example, estradiol and progesterone. That's the whole definition. Importantly, many bioidentical hormones are available as FDA-approved products, which are well-studied and standardized. There are also custom-compounded bioidentical preparations mixed at a pharmacy; these can be appropriate in specific situations, but they aren't FDA-approved, their dosing can be less consistent, and major menopause guidance generally favors approved products when a suitable one exists.1 A good clinic will be honest with you about which is which.

What BHRT can help with

For women in perimenopause or menopause, hormone therapy — including bioidentical options — is the most effective treatment for hot flashes and night sweats, and it can help with sleep, mood, and vaginal symptoms.1 What it is not is a guaranteed anti-aging or weight-loss cure, despite how it's sometimes advertised. We frame BHRT as a tool for managing genuine hormonal symptoms and quality of life, with realiztic expectations.

How it should be prescribed

Responsible BHRT is individualized and monitored, not a one-size protocol handed out after a quick visit. That means:

The right candidate, the right dose, and ongoing monitoring are what separate safe, effective hormone therapy from the “pellet mill” approach.

An honest, physician-led approach

At Lavena Health, our bioidentical hormone therapy for women is prescribed and monitored by a physician who is A4M-certified in hormone optimization, at a flat, transparent monthly price. We'll tell you plainly whether BHRT is a reasonable fit for your symptoms and history — and if another approach makes more sense, we'll say so.
